Bar Code Samples
There are many different types of bar code, often referred to as bar code symbologies.
Bar codes are similar to Morse code. Different bar and space patterns are used to signify different characters. These patterns are then grouped together to form a "symbology." Each symbology has its own unique characteristics and features. Many are designed to represent the needs of a specific application or industry. The UPC symbology was designed for retail and grocery items, while PostNET encodes zip codes for the US Postal Service.
To the right are several bar code samples. Each refers to different uses, but all have the common purpose of encoding a string of characters as a set of bars and spaces.
